Tile Mural (UNIQUE) Finishes, Materials and Installation.

Finishes for Tile Murals are unique.

We offer three finishes on our tile murals. All three are water resistant and totally applicable for Baths and outdoors as well as most commercial locations.

1) Matte, a mostly flat finish.

2) Satin, a semi-gloss finish.

3) Glossy, a high gloss finish (not a glass finish).

Based on our experience, the satin finish is better than the matte for either tile type if your mural is going to go in a wet location. The high gloss finish is usually not recommended for the tumbled stone tiles if you want to maintain the “old world” look and feel of your mural.

Tile Types

We use ceramic and tumbled stone; porcelain and others upon request. Our tiles are as close to WHITE as possible as the tile acts as our “canvas” for the colors we use.

(Please note: All tile sizes and the final resulting mural size is dependent on size of the base tile used including spacers. The exact size of a completed product will vary based on tile type, spacer size and manufacture date. As well, individual tile sizes within a tile type and size will vary slightly and therefore the final size of your product will vary. [Natural Stone tiles will have more variance] We cannot guarantee the final 'exact' size of your product. IMPORTANT: Once your art on tile is complete, the tiles should not be cut or drilled at all. Please make sure you order the final size if you need a custom fit, and we will cut to size before we manufacture!! [again within the tile size variances])

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO

Our ceramic tiles (Ceramic Tile) are like the traditional white tiles you see in a lot of kitchens and bathrooms, in commercial locations and outdoors. The sizes we use for all of our Murals are traditionally 4.25” x 4.25” OR 6” x 6”. All ceramic tiles have “spacers” that are a part of the tile. When the tiles are placed next to each other, the spacers touch and create a 1/16th of an inch grout line in-between each tile. These tiles are 1/4 inch thick. We also offer 1, 2 and 3 inch square tile in ceramic (click to see Ceramic 2 Inch Tile sheet) on a mesh backing coming in 12 inch by 12 inch sheets which can be cut to size. There may be a slight price difference for these smaller mesh backed tile types.

The tumbled stone tile (can be from from this Tumbled Stone Tile to this Tumbled Stone Tile2) looks more like tumbled marble. It does have the “natural” veining and pitting throughout the tile along with some of the corners and edges being a bit rough looking. All of this gives the mural a more “old world” look and feel. We get tiles that are as close to white as possible but they have the physical visual characteristics shown in the photos above. Their sizes are 4” x 4” OR 6” x 6”. There are NO SPACERS on these tiles…so, you may place them as close or as far apart as you would like when installing within installation limits. These tiles are 3/8 inch thick. Stone is a natural product subject to variations in color, shade, veining, exact size per piece and polish. These variations are what make natural stone unique. Although this photo (above) accurately represents this species of stone, variations will occur. We also offer 1, 2 and 3 inch square tile tumbled stone (click to see Tumbled Stone 2 inch tile sheet) on a mesh backing coming in 12 inch by 12 inch sheets which can be cut to size. There may be a slight price difference for these smaller mesh backed tile types. We also offer larger size stone floor tiles (12x12, 18x18 and other available on request).

We offer standard sizes of Porcelain tiles including 4 inch and 6 inch tiles.

Prices for the larger tiles, mesh backed tiles and Porcelain tiles are available on request.

If you want to match either tile type for the rest of your wall, go to www.daltile.com and find a distributor in your area. That’s where we buy our blank tiles. However, it is very easy to find tiles to match at just about any tile or home improvement store.

Installation/Grouting/Sealing

We have our products installed in all kinds of locations throughout the world, in commercial locations and everyplace imaginable inside/outside the home. These instructions work and are easy to follow for anyone. BEFORE you do though, please READ the information that comes with your mural. If you are going to have a professional installer come in, make sure THEY read it as well. [They contain the latest, best instructions. This page is a general overview.] Along with this sheet, there is a picture grid of your mural that has numbers that correspond with the numbers we have put on the back of your tiles. (IMPORTANT: Once your art on tile is complete, the tiles should not be cut or drilled at all. Please make sure you order the final size if you need a custom fit, and we will cut to size before we manufacture!! [again within the tile size variances]).

We do recommend using industry standards for wet locations (Industry standards are created by industry consensus groups consisting of installers, producers, and industry experts through organizations such as ANSI (American National Standards Institute), TCNA (Tile Council of North America), ASTM (America Society for Testing and Materials) or ICC (International Code Council). These consensus-group members combine their many years of experience with science to establish standards so problems and failures can be avoided and not repeated. Thus if standards are not followed then known potential problems can’t be avoided.). We do recommend using ThinSet for installing tiles in wet locations as it is more resistant to mold growth. Please follwo the instructions on the thinset when purchased to mix and apply. Just make sure that your mural is held in place for 24 hours so no “slippage” of tiles occurs. (this can be done by placing a thin, flat piece of wood under the bottom row of tiles and temporarily nailing it into place until the adhesive is dry.) Do not use tape on the face of the tile.

Due to the “spacers” that are a part of the CERAMIC tiles…there will be a grout line in-between each tile that will need to be filled. Normal grouting procedures (putting grouting material all over the tiles and then taking a wet sponge and wiping off the access.) can be followed, but please have the indstaller insure no excess grout is left on the face of your beautiful product. As an alternative, after the thinset holding the mural dries…just get a tube of SAND LESS grout and run it down the seams. Then, take a wet finger and smooth it out. Voila! You’re done!

With the TUMBLED STONE, use spacers to define the grout line size you wish, then follow normal grouting procedures, but please have the installer insure no excess grout is left on the face of your beautiful product. IN ALL CASES, PLEASE USE SANDLESS GROUT with our products.

You may want to wait until your mural arrives to choose what color grouting to use. Some people like to match one of the subtle colors used in the artwork. That is easier to do once your mural is there vs. what you see on our website.

DO NOT PUT ADDITIONAL SEALER on our tiles!! There are already commercial grade protective coatings applied and with so many different brands of sealers on the market, we don’t know how another product would interact with ours coatings. Close to 90% of our tiles are used for bathroom murals, we’ve taken care of you with OUR coatings. Sealing the grout is easy with a applicator (avaiable at most tile or home improvement stores) for just sealing the grout areas.

Cleaning

We’ve kept this one easy, use a soft cloth and warm water. A mild soap is fine…but no harsh chemicals or abrasives should be used. Consider using a squeege for bathroom installation to prevent spotting. Because we sell our murals all over the world, it would be impossible for us to test all the cleaning products on the market on our tiles and the different finishes we offer. So, to keep them safe we recommend the same method of cleaning to everyone. We’ve been doing this for 15 years and it’s worked beautifully for everyone! Again, make sure if you are having your mural installed by a professional that they READ THE INSTRUCTIONS that come with the mural. This information is on there.
